"Potters love to play in the mud and get dirty!"
Wight Pottery was established in January 2015 by Karen Wight. The studio is located on Lake Norman in Denver, NC.
The studio, often referred to as the "Pottery Barn", is quite small but houses all I need to produce my work. As all potters know, you can never have too much space. I have learned that organization and cleanliness is essential in tight spaces.
My love of pottery began years ago when I was in high school. I took a couple of studio classes in college. Now with time in my life to focus on my passions, pottery has taken center stage. I enjoy the solitude of working in the studio, the peaceful moments spent refining a skill, and the relentless attempts to master one. This solitude allows me to focus on my skills and technique of throwing. I have taken classes, attended workshops, read many books and viewed many youtube videos to build my knowledge about working with clay. I still have so much to learn.
I have questioned many artists about what makes a "Master Potter"? And I was told it is one whom takes their art seriously, has a passion and desire to learn and grow and is not confined to working inside the "box". Accepting this definition, my goal is to enjoy the journey of becoming a "Master Potter".
I am inspired by nature and the endless potential of creating something with my own hands that is both decorative and functional.
My work consists of functional pottery which is thrown and hand built. I use a variety of glazing techniques, some of which include dipping, spraying, brushing, sponging and transferring.
